What You'll Learn During Our Event

Whether you're a novice to night photography or a seasoned professional, our comprehensive series of learning modules is designed to elevate your photography skills to new heights

Topics covered will include:

  • Ideal gear - what the pros are using and why.

  • Low ISO long exposures vs high ISO short exposures – when and why?

  • Recording movement of light.

  • Focusing in the dark.

  • Light painting on any budget.

  • Composition: Photographing at any height but eye level.

  • Safety considerations.

  • Relying on your talent, not your computer: Create “organic” photos using your eyes as your guide, not based on post production expectations.

  • White Balance; capturing the silvery light of the moon, and squashing streetlights.

Have fun! I don’t like boring lectures, and you probably don’t either.  This workshop is designed to give you insight and tips that will help you develop your own "after dark" style.  And more!

In The Field

We recognize that everyone learns differently, and our goal is to support you, answer your questions, and assist you on your creative journey throughout this experience. Whether you need extra guidance or prefer a more independent approach, we'll be there for you in the field whenever you need us. We're not there to take our own shots; instead, we'll photograph for demonstration and educational purposes. This event is all about you and your growth—your time, your journey.

Your Hosts

Shehab Hossain
Shehab is a visual artist specializing in urban night photography and light painting.  His craft is making photos of his light painting strokes in urban environments.  He uses various durations of a camera exposure to paint objects and places with light.  Shehab’s photos celebrate a unique look on old places.  The plot of his night photos is mostly of places we are accustomed to seeing in daylight.  His favorite places are abandoned spaces. The final prints on canvas, metal or glass bring out the vibrancy of ambient and light painting within these nocturnal scenes.  His award winning and published photographs have been featured in exhibitions in various cities and are part of several private collections around the world.  Shehab currently lives and practices his craft in Boston, Massachusetts

Jeff McCrum

In addition to his award-winning night photography and time organizing New York City’s only night-photography Meetup Jeff spends his days as a theatrical lighting designer.   This has allowed him to have a deeper understanding of working with photons, both available illumination and additive light painting, working to create dramatically lit scenes for the camera.  He has also run New York City's only night photography Meetup since 2014 and is always interested in helping people see the opportunities after the sun goes down. Venice has become a comfortable destination during the past five years and the nighttime streets have been a delight to capture at any time of the year.  He has a wide array of flashlights and Polaroid cameras on his shelf and runs a small 3D printing company on the side making light modifiers and he also has a book of his night photography of Monhegan, Maine.
