SHUTTER UP & SHOOT; SCULPTING PORTRAITS - a light painting workshop in Lexington MA - February 4, 7, & 12, 2026
$75.00
Light Painting is an artistic photographic technique for creating images using a combination of lights and movement. In some cases the lights are moving and in other cases, the camera is moving. This class is intended for those who own DSLR or mirrorless cameras who would like a gentle introduction to light painting. We will be working in an indoor studio with small lights, allowing us to practice techniques that can apply to larger, outdoor projects, but without the discomforts of being outdoors on a cold night.
What You'll Learn During Our Event
Whether you're a novice to lighpainting or a seasoned professional, our comprehensive series of learning modules is designed to elevate your photography skills to new heights
This class involves two online sessions (on February 4th and 12th) and one in-studio session (on February 7th).
The first session, over Zoom, will provide an introduction to different forms of light painting and an overview of the techniques that we will use in the studio session.
Topics covered will include:
Ideal gear - what the pros are using and why.
Low ISO long exposures vs high ISO short exposures – when and why?
Recording movement of light.
Focusing in the dark.
Light painting on any budget.
Composition.
Safety considerations.
Relying on your talent, not your computer: Create “organic” photos using your eyes as your guide, not based on post production expectations.
Have fun! We don’t like boring lectures, and you probably don’t either. This workshop is designed to give you insight and tips that will help you develop your own "after dark" style. And more!
The second session will be an in-studio experience with a variety of different light painting setups, allowing you to experiment with the instructor's collection of light-painting tools.
We recognize that everyone learns differently, and our goal is to support you, answer your questions, and assist you on your creative journey throughout this experience. Whether you need extra guidance or prefer a more independent approach, we'll be there for you in the studio whenever you need us. We'll photograph for demonstration and educational purposes. This event is all about you and your growth—your time, your journey.
We will follow up with an online image review session that will include a discussion of different strategies for editing light painting images.
What to bring:
Camera that can be used in manual mode (DSLR or Mirrorless), tripod, water and snacks.
